ANNE BEMENT  |  PHOTOGRAPHER AND VISUAL ARTIST

I was drawn to photography as a way to make my transition from New York to California. With my background in television I instinctively used a visual path, photographing San Francisco streets and California landscapes. Living in California also introduced me to Eastern religions and cultures and led me to Japan, where my images became more and more impressionistic. As I traveled in India, China, Turkey, Cuba and Morocco this form continued; my intent to search for the emotional essence of the place and its cultural heritage.

The process for my landscape photographs was complex; beginning with black and white film, negatives manipulated and printed in the darkroom and ending up in my studio where I applied layers of pigments, dyes and toners individually to my prints. Often I used more than one negative within a single frame.

Over time I saw that my images were moving from impressionistic to abstract. Some abstractions happen in the camera, others in the darkroom. I have now moved into the creation of completely abstract images created digitally or combined with an earlier silver gelatin print. I begin with a tangible form that I use as a base to create an abstract image that pleases me.

As my years progressed, I have become more introspective and find that thoughts have become as important to express as creating visual images. When my thoughts and my visual images relate, I combine the two with haiku, a short form of Japanese poetry. At times I find an image that moves or delights me emotionally and haiku follows. At other times a thought seems important and I search for an image that reflects it.
